Acoustic materials (mainly refers to sound absorbing material) involve all aspects of life. In the United States, only 1% of acoustic materials are used for music recording field, more for residential, hotels, restaurants, office buildings, gymnasium and other construction and decoration.

According to functional classification, acoustic materials can be divided into sound absorbing materials, sound insulation materials, damping materials and sound materials.

Sound absorbing materials is the "main" and the most common material of the acoustic materials. Generally the material with sound absorption coefficient greater than 0.3 is called sound absorbing materials. From its characteristics, sound absorption materials can be divided into: porous sound absorbing materials, resonant sound absorbing materials and special sound absorbing materials. The porous sound absorbing materials mainly absorbs high frequency sound energy; resonant sound absorbing materials mainly absorbs low-frequency sound energy; special sound absorbing materials is the most magical as it can perform different function in accordance with the requirements. A soundproof material is a class of materials, components, or structures that can isolate, partition, and separate noise from the air. It is characterized by heavy quality, high density, such as steel, lead plate, concrete walls, brick walls and so on. Damping material is a material with internal wear and internal friction, which converts the solid mechanical vibration energy into heat energy and is mainly used for vibration and noise control.

According to the application classification, it can be divided into build sound materials, underwater acoustic materials, ultrasonic materials.

According to the material, it can be divided into fiber material, foam material, polymer materials and structural materials.

Currently, the focus of acoustic materials research is on micro-perforated plate sound-absorbing materials, phononic crystal materials, low-frequency thin-layer acoustic materials and acoustic intelligent materials.
